Case Study:
Background:
The Gunnebo Entrance Control sustainability team wanted to:
a) Pilot a way to cut carbon emissions related to digital use amongst its workforce
b) Engage its employees in playing an active role in its sustainability journey and demonstrably reduce digital waste
c) Reduce costs related to hosting and energy consumption
The Project
Step 1: Halo first identified high impact areas - we assessed the existing data, working with GEC’s IT team, putting together the ‘dirty dozen’ i.e. the key 12 behaviours which were linked to the highest emissions.
Step 2: We then set meaningful KPI’s linking these 12 high impact behaviours, to measurable sustainability goals (such as reducing monthly email volume or shrinking cloud file sizes) so that GEC could measure (and report on) the carbon reduction impact of the pilot in line with its Sustainability Strategy.
Step 3: We went on to run an employee survey to understand knowledge levels around emissions associated with digital activities and challenges and opportunities around the ‘dirty dozen’ behaviours.
Step 4: Then we ran a virtual activation workshop with the marketing team to educate them about digital carbon footprint in the context of GEC’s Sustainability Strategy, walk them through a series of activities to cut it (then and there) and work with them to set individual and team based goals to keep their team’s digital carbon footprint low.
The Results
o Reduced emissions then and there - 85% reduction (2,537.61kgCO2e reduction). This was documented in GEC’s 2025 Impact Report here on page 38.
o Increased confidence among participants in GEC’s sustainability journey in a credible and fun way
a) 100% felt more confident in GEC’s sustainability efforts
b) Average rating for workshop was 8.5 out of 10
o Long term behaviour change (at home and at work) with 67% saying they were likely to sustain the behaviours and 83% likely to extend behaviours into their personal life.
o GEC is planning on rolling out the ‘Green the Screen’ workshop to all departments next year.
What the client had to say…..
Working with the Halo by Design team was transformative. They seamlessly integrated with our team, bringing in vital expertise across digital innovation and behavioural insight to help shape our digital waste pilot.
Their approach combined strategic clarity with hands-on collaboration, ensuring our initiatives were both data-driven and human-focused. I would highly recommend partnering with Tam and her team to any organisation looking to accelerate sustainability outcomes through creative and evidence-led design.
